Description: I like to start all projects with a free approach, without limitations and with permission to explore all edges of the project parameters. Many times this will lead to a winning concept that functions better than the initial client brief. The above deck shows visual explorations leading up to f inal selections.

I have evenly distributed illustration and typographic throughout my career. Because of this, much of my work has influences of both which leading to some ironic combinations.

The challenge for this project brief was that it required designing a series of tee shirt graphics with the criteria that they be made with numbers only. I explored various approaches of using numbers as images or subliminal messaging and came up some interesting results, my two favorite versions shown above.

Inspiration came from remembering how as a kid I used to type words for fun on a calculator. This is the first design that uses the numbers 07734 to spell “hello” upsidedown. The second design came about while playing with positive and negative space and trying to camouflage the numbers by splitting them up. They are surprisingly readable despite the disintegration. The numbers are random, hopefully engaging the viewer to wonder the significance.

When teaching, I always preach about sketching first in pencil before proceeding to digital. Here are some initial sketches which illustrate how I practice what I preach. The company was a bakery, the brief was completely open.
