Illustration

I've been illustrating for as long as I could hold a crayon, so it’s only natural that it shows up within my professional design work. I’ve worked on projects where illustrations are the final outcome, and found that these skills are used in the development of other projects that are not literally illustration. Here are some of my recent favorites:

Challenge: The primary purpose of this extensive project was to attract and inform potential students and their parents. The Viewbook showcases the University, the programs, the faculty, student life, costs & housing, and the city of Doha, Qatar in general – and both in English and Arabic.

The secondary purpose of this project was to showcase design potential to affect the world. The brief required that the f inished piece be an extreme example of environmental conscientiousness.

Solution: Of course, this could have stopped and started with recycled paper however, I felt it should showcase more.

The four department sections were designed to be individual pieces that slid into the main section's spine. That way, if the user was not interested in a topic, they could customize their own Viewbook based only on their specif ic interests without having to take the other sections. The booklet sections were printed separately and when they ran out, only those sections needed to be reprinted, instead of the entire book (thus conserving materials).

TacoLove

This illustration was for a company that sells postcards, tee-shirts, caps and the like. Following recent trends in subject matter, my client requested a drawing having something to do with tacos – apparently a recent, favorite subject matter appearing in social media. Despite the broad topic, I made this as an initial idea which the client accepted as a final version.

Recently I created idea sketches for a client with variations on a theme. I drew them in ball point pen and emailed them the preliminary ideas. The client liked the sketches in their initital idea proposal form and I ended up creating the final in ball point pen. This happened more than once and I wonder if there is a resurgence in maintaining the evidence of having been hand drawn.

RescueAFriend

A popular theme recently is that of Dogs. And not just “Dogs,” but the rescuing of dogs. Because of this, I drew this tee-shirt design showing various breeds of dogs.

I used this challenge to see if I could get a digital drawing to replicate a hand-drawn quality. Its very close and has great benefits regarding instantaneous editing.

UncomprehensiblyStrange

A greeting card illustration of a puffer fish. I drew the type as well to mimic the “puffy” nature of the fish. Again, the client really liked the pen drawn quality of the initially-proposed sketches and ironically, I ended up replicating those sketches for the final.

A typographic illustrtion for a tee shirt design. One of the earlier iterations shown on the right in blue. This is an example of how type becomes intgrated into the illustration.
